How you can help.

There’s something for everyone at the la Souterraine English Library.  You can participate in multiple activities with the established in-house groups, have a coffee and cake while enjoying our collection of over 4000 fiction & non-fiction items, including a loan from the DVD library.

Throughout the year we organise social events, exhibitions for the local and expat community including information resources for you to explore as a central hub for integration.

From a single donation to a lifetime as a Patron, to a volunteer, there are many ways you can support us and experience the Library’s charm.

The brainchild of the late Rodney Sabine, the La Souterraine English Library and Information Centre (the Library) was founded in 2009. The Library is an Association, registered under the law of 1901. (A copy of the Statutes can be found here.)

The main purposes of the Association are first, to provide a Library facility for its members; second, to act as a source of information on some of the practicalities of living in France; third, to provide a focus to help members of the English-speaking community integrate with their French neighbours.

The Library is a not-for-profit organisation which is run by its members for the benefit of its members. Everyone involved in the operation of the Library is a volunteer; nobody is paid. The costs of running the Library, most notably heating and maintenance, are met by the members themselves, through an annual membership fee; sales in the café; contributions for participation in group activities and various social events; and donations. Every centime received is used to support directly the Library’s activities.

The Library forms a very important social service for many of its members. Its facilities, activities and members help with the settling-in process for many new arrivals in the area and provide vital support for members in difficulties. For that reason, membership fees are maintained at an affordable level to ensure that they do not present a barrier for participation to anyone who wishes to take part.

If you feel that you would like a make a donation, once-off or regular, to help the Library to maintain and expand its activities, your help would be greatly appreciated.

On behalf of the Library, thank you for taking the time to read this.
