About The Library

The library is based in an historic building dating from the 15th century and belongs to the La Souterraine mairie who kindly allow us to use it rent free. The library is an association and was founded in 2009 and its statutes can be found here. It is funded by membership subscriptions and fund raising events which are held throughout the year.  The library has two Co- Presidents which form two parts of the main Bureau along with the Secretary and Treasurer,  they are all helped in their role by a council (conseil) made up of library members. A list of Bureau and Conseil members can be found here.
We are always looking for volunteers and if you would like to help in the library, please contact Christine Seaman as she is the Chief Librarian.

Most of the books are donated by our members but we also buy new publications with our funds. Members may borrow up to a maximum of eight books, CDs or DVDs for a period of three weeks. We try to keep things as simple as possible and do not operate a system of fines for overdue books, although it is appreciated if books can be returned on time. There are also wifi and copying facilities at the library.

Many library members have lived in France for a long time and will have a lot of local knowledge and experience of how things are done in France. Should you require any information on car registration, tax matters, etc. we will do our best to help – just ask!
