About The Library

The library is based in an historic building dating from the 15th century. The premises belong to the town of La Souterraine which kindly loans them to us. The library is an association. It was founded in 2009 and its statutes can be found here. It is funded by membership subscriptions and fund raising events which are held throughout the year.  The library Association is run by the Bureau assisted by a Council (Conseil) made up of library members. A list of Bureau and Conseil members can be found here.

Your library relies entirely on members volunteering their services to function, and if you would like to get involved, please contact Christine Seaman , our Chief Librarian.

Books are donated by our members but we also buy new publications with our funds. Members may borrow up to a maximum of eight books, CDs or DVDs for a period of three weeks. We try to keep things as simple as possible and do not operate a system of fines for overdue books, although it is appreciated if books can be returned on time. There are also wifi and copying facilities at the library.

Many library members have lived in France for a long time and will have a lot of local knowledge and experience of how things are done in France. Should you require any information on car registration, tax matters, etc. we will do our best to help – just ask!
